What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhone cameras have used since iOS 11. It uses the HEIF standard and produces files roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG, which is why Apple switched to it — but that efficiency comes at a cost: most Windows PCs, Android phones, and web platforms can’t open HEIC files without extra software. Converting to JPG makes your photos work everywhere.

Which quality setting should I use?

Better (92%) is the default and the right choice for most photos — it produces JPGs that are visually indistinguishable from the original HEIC to the naked eye, at a reasonable file size. Use Good (80%) if you’re uploading many photos and want smaller files, such as for a website or to send by email. Use Best (100%) if you’re editing the photos further or printing them — lossless JPG ensures you don’t lose any detail before your next step.

Common questions

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device and are never sent to any server.

How many files can I convert at once?

There’s no hard limit on the number of files, but very large batches (20+ photos at once) may be slow on older devices since each conversion uses your device’s CPU. For large batches, consider converting in groups of 10–15.

Why can’t my computer open HEIC files?

Windows doesn’t support HEIC natively unless you install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Most Android phones, non-Apple software, and older applications also lack HEIC support. JPG is universally compatible, which is why converting is often the simplest solution.

Will the conversion keep my photo’s original quality?

At 92% and 100% quality settings, yes — the output JPG will be visually identical to the HEIC original. At 80%, you may notice very slight softening in fine details, but it’s imperceptible in most photos. Note that JPEG is a lossy format by design, so some mathematical data is discarded even at 100% quality; the result is visually lossless rather than technically lossless.

Does this converter work on iPhone or Android?

Yes. The converter works in any modern mobile browser. On iPhone, you can convert HEIC photos directly from your Photos app — tap Share → Save to Files, then upload here. Note that Safari on iPhone may automatically convert HEIC to JPEG when you share or export photos, so you may not need to convert at all in those cases.

Is EXIF data (location, date, camera settings) kept?

The converted JPG may not retain all EXIF metadata from the original HEIC file. If preserving EXIF data (such as GPS location or date taken) is important, use dedicated desktop software like Adobe Lightroom or a dedicated EXIF-preserving converter.
